Willard is a community in Box Elder County, located between Brigham City and Ogden. Situated along U.S. 89 and cushioned beneath Willard Peak, it has a population of about 1,700. Historically, fruit crops have been a major product in Willard, and you will still find fruit stands located along Highway 89. There are some businesses in Willard, but most people commute nearby.
To the west of Willard are salt flats and Willard Bay.
Willard Bay State Park is a major recreational area that offers camping, trails, geocaching, and nature watching, as well as boating, swimming, water sports, and fishing in Willard Bay, a freshwater reservoir on the flood plains of the Great Salt Lake. Another interesting site near Weber is the
Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, which comprises almost 80,000 acres, and is the largest freshwater component of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem. Because the refuge is surrounded by arid desert lands, it is an oasis for wildlife, especially birds. Millions of birds come to the refuge to eat and rest during their migration, and many of them stay to breed, nest, and raise young. The Bear River Bird Refuge Visitors Center offers an educational look at the importance of wetland environments.
Residents in this quiet, tight-knit community, enjoy plenty of activities, including a 4
th of July Celebration, which begins with a Fireman’s ball the evening before, and continues with races, booths, and fireworks the next day. Plentiful recreational opportunities are just a short drive away. Brigham City, 7 miles north, hosts an annual Peach Days Celebration that brings together residents and visitors to celebrate the best peaches in Utah, with entertainment, activities, food, and fun. Also in Brigham City are the
Eagle Mountain Golf Course and the
Brigham City Museum. In Ogden, 18 miles south, you can visit
Waterfall Canyon Trail, Dinosaur Park and Museum, Utah State Railroad Museum, Ogden Nature Center, and
Fort Buenaventura, just to name a few. Plenty of skiing and snowboarding opportunities surround Willard as well, including
Ogden Nordic, Powder Mountain, and
Nordic Vallley.
